British Open Cut Rules: Top 70 and Ties Advance to Weekend

Making the Cut at the Open

Key Changes to the Rules

The Open Championship has implemented minor changes to its cut rule, ensuring that only the top 70 players and ties will advance to the weekend rounds. This rule, first introduced in 1898, has been a cornerstone of the Open's format and remains a crucial aspect of the tournament. Unlike the PGA Championship, which also cuts to the low 70 and ties, and the US Open, where the cut falls at the top 60 and ties, the Open's cut provides a slightly wider berth for players to make it through to the final two rounds. Notably, the Open has eliminated the "10-shot rule," which previously allowed anyone within 10 shots of the lead after two rounds to continue playing, regardless of their position on the leaderboard. "This change is intended to ensure a more consistent and fair cut rule across the four major championships," said Martin Slumbers, Chief Executive of The R&A, the governing body of the Open. "We believe this new rule will provide a more equitable opportunity for players to make it through to the weekend and contend for the championship." The new cut rule will be in effect for the 2023 Open Championship, which will be held at Royal Liverpool Golf Club from July 20-23.
