Mutiny in Heaven: The Rise and Fall of The Birthday Party

A Film by Nicholas Abrahams

Documentary Premiere Coming Soon

Mutiny in Heaven is the first fully authorized telling of the history of The Birthday Party, one of underground rock's most iconic bands. The film features interviews with the band's surviving members, Nick Cave, Mick Harvey, Rowland S. Howard, and Tracy Pew, as well as rare archival footage and performances. Abrahams' film is a must-see for fans of The Birthday Party and anyone interested in the history of post-punk music.

The Birthday Party formed in Melbourne, Australia, in 1973. The band's early sound was a mix of punk rock and free jazz, and they quickly gained a reputation for their dark and abrasive live performances. In 1978, The Birthday Party relocated to London, where they signed with the 4AD record label. The band's debut album, Prayers on Fire, was released in 1981 and was a critical and commercial success. The Birthday Party followed up Prayers on Fire with the even more acclaimed Junkyard in 1982. However, internal tensions within the band led to their breakup in 1983.

Nick Cave went on to form Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, while Mick Harvey and Rowland S. Howard formed Crime and the City Solution. Tracy Pew retired from music and became a visual artist. Mutiny in Heaven is the first time that all four members of The Birthday Party have spoken about the band's history on film. The film is a revealing and honest account of one of the most important bands in post-punk music.
